TrueTalkie — Tactical Offline Mesh & Cloud Walkie-Talkie
Dual-mode push-to-talk voice system operating across cloud WebRTC networks and offline ad-hoc Wi-Fi/hotspot peer-to-peer topologies.

Key Architecture & Highlights
Engineered for extreme reliability, low latency, and deterministic execution under real-world operating constraints.
Dual-Transport Physical Layer Architecture
Engineered an adaptive transport manager that continuously probes WAN connectivity and auto-negotiates the lowest-latency transport. Over the internet, voice data traverses encrypted WebRTC RTP channels with Opus codecs. In disconnected environments, the app switches to an offline UDP broadcast engine, transmitting raw PCM/Opus frames directly across localized IP subnets without handshake overhead.
Native Android Foreground Service & Kotlin Engine
Bypassed aggressive mobile OS power-management and doze-mode restrictions by writing custom native Kotlin modules. Employs persistent Android Foreground Services bound to real-time audio capture buffers (`AudioRecord`) and hardware-level acoustic echo cancellation (AEC), allowing full push-to-talk reception even when the device display is off or another app is active.
Subnet Auto-Discovery & Dynamic Gateway Resolution
Solved local hotspot routing limitations by implementing automated gateway IP discovery and subnet mask parsing. Devices advertise their presence via low-overhead heartbeat datagrams on dedicated broadcast ports, establishing ad-hoc talk groups in milliseconds with zero manual network setup.
ICE Candidate Traversal & Resilient Signaling
Configured robust STUN/TURN fallback cascades and dynamic candidate gathering over Supabase Realtime WebSocket channels, overcoming restrictive Symmetric NATs and mobile carrier CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT) configurations.
Technologies & Infrastructure
System Design & Engineering Decisions
TrueTalkie addresses one of the fundamental vulnerabilities of modern voice communications: the total reliance on centralized cellular base stations and public internet infrastructure. In disaster-recovery scenarios, remote fieldwork, and congested environments, conventional VoIP apps fail immediately upon link degradation. TrueTalkie introduces a resilient hybrid communication topology. When internet access is present, audio streams navigate low-latency WebRTC peer connections coordinated via Supabase Realtime signaling. The instant internet connectivity drops, the system seamlessly transitions into a zero-configuration ad-hoc local mesh, utilizing raw UDP multicast packets broadcasted directly over local Wi-Fi or mobile hotspot subnets.
Verified Highlights & Protocol Constraints
- Engineered dual-mode push-to-talk supporting real-time voice communication over cloud networks and offline peer-to-peer Wi-Fi and hotspot connections.
- Integrated WebRTC for real-time audio communication and Supabase Realtime for online signaling and connection coordination.
- Developed a native Kotlin audio streaming component with foreground services to support background audio functionality.
- Implemented gateway IP resolution and UDP packet serialization to support local-network communication in offline mode.
- Investigated WebRTC connectivity issues involving ICE negotiation, STUN discovery, and hotspot network limitations during multi-device testing.
